Equipment

  • A 9x13-inch baking dish
  • Mixing bowls (one large, one medium)
  • Whisk
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Spatula or wooden spoon

Ingredients

  • Croissants 6 large
  • Blueberries 2 cups
  • Eggs 6
  • Milk 1½ cups
  • Heavy Cream 1 cup
  • Sugar ½ cup
  • Vanilla Extract 1 teaspoon
  • Ground Cinnamon ½ teaspoon, optional
  • Powdered Sugar for dusting

Optional Add-ins:

  • Maple Syrup or Honey: For a drizzle of sweetness.
  • Cream Cheese: Swirl in cream cheese pieces for extra creaminess.

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Bread

  • Cut a loaf of slightly stale bread into small cubes. Stale bread is better because it soaks up the custard without getting too mushy. Spread the bread evenly in a greased 9x13-inch baking dish so it covers the bottom.

Step 2: Make the Custard

  • In a large bowl, whisk together six eggs until smooth. Slowly add two cups of milk, one cup of heavy cream, half a cup of sugar, and a teaspoon of vanilla extract. Keep whisking until it’s all mixed together with no lumps.

Step 3: Put it Together

  • Pour the custard over the bread cubes in the dish, making sure all the bread gets coated. Press down gently with a spatula to help the bread soak it up. Sprinkle fresh or frozen blueberries on top, spreading them evenly.

Step 4: Let it Chill

  • Cover the dish with plastic wrap and put it in the fridge for at least two hours, or overnight if you can. This helps the bread absorb the custard and makes the flavors even better.

Step 5: Bake It

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Take off the plastic wrap and place the dish in the oven. Bake for 45-50 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the center is set but still a bit soft.

Step 6: Serve and Enjoy

  • Take the casserole out of the oven and let it cool for 10 minutes. Add powdered sugar, maple syrup, or whipped cream on top if you like. Cut into pieces, serve warm, and enjoy your delicious Blueberry French Toast Casserole!

Notes

For the best results, use day-old croissants to absorb the custard fully and distribute blueberries evenly for every bite. Don’t skip letting the casserole sit for a few minutes before serving—it helps the flavors settle for an even more delightful experience!
