Equipment

  • Large skillet
  • Medium pot and colander
  • Potato masher or handheld mixer
  • 9x13-inch baking dish
  • Wooden spoon

Ingredients

For the Meat Layer:

  • Ground beef or lamb 1½ lbs: The star of the dish, rich and savory.
  • Onion 1 medium, diced: Adds subtle sweetness and depth.
  • Garlic 2 cloves, minced: Aromatic and flavorful.
  • Carrots 2 medium, diced and peas (1 cup): Bring color and a slight crunch.
  • Tomato paste 2 tbsp: Enhances the umami flavor.
  • Worcestershire sauce 2 tbsp: Provides a tangy undertone.
  • Beef broth ¾ cup: Creates a rich, savory sauce for the filling.
  • Thyme 1 tsp and rosemary (1 tsp): Earthy herbs that elevate the dish.
  • Salt and black pepper to taste.

For the Potato Topping:

  • Potatoes 2 lbs, peeled and cubed: The ultimate comfort food base.
  • Butter 4 tbsp: For creaminess and flavor.
  • Milk ½ cup: Makes the mashed potatoes silky smooth.
  • Cheddar cheese 1 cup, shredded: Because everything is better with cheese!
  • Salt to taste.

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Potatoes

  • Start by peeling and cutting the potatoes into similar-sized pieces so they cook evenly. Put the pieces in a pot of cold, salted water and bring it to a boil. Cook the potatoes until they are soft and a fork goes through easily, about 15-20 minutes. When done, drain the water using a colander and put the potatoes back in the pot to mash.

Step 2: Make the Mashed Potatoes

  • Use a potato masher or mixer to mash the potatoes until they are smooth. Add butter, warm milk, and a little salt and pepper for a creamy texture. Mix everything well until it’s all combined. Set the mashed potatoes aside—they will be the top layer of your Shepherd’s Pie.

Step 3: Cook the Meat and Vegetables

  • Heat a big pan on medium heat and add a little oil. When the pan is hot, add ground beef or lamb and cook until it turns brown, breaking it into small pieces with a spoon. Pour out any extra fat, then add chopped onions, garlic, and vegetables like carrots, peas, and celery. Cook everything until the onions look clear and the veggies are a bit soft.

Step 4: Create the Flavorful Filling

  • To make the tasty filling, sprinkle a little flour over the cooked meat and vegetables and mix it well. Slowly pour in beef broth while stirring to keep it smooth. Add a bit of Worcestershire sauce and herbs like thyme or rosemary for extra flavor. Let it cook until the sauce thickens and everything tastes great together.

Step 5: Assemble the Shepherd’s Pie

  • Set your oven to 400°F (200°C). Put the filling into a 9x13-inch baking dish and spread it out evenly. Then, add the mashed potatoes on top, spreading them all the way to the edges to cover the filling. If you want, use a fork to make patterns on the mashed potatoes.

Step 6: Bake to Perfection

  • Put the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden and the filling bubbles at the edges. If you want, broil it for a few extra minutes to make the top crispy and brown. When done, take it out of the oven and let it cool a bit before serving.

Notes

This recipe is best enjoyed fresh out of the oven with its warm, gooey center and crispy topping. Take your time to adjust the seasonings to your liking and make sure to keep the balance between sauce and texture for the perfect consistency. Don’t hesitate to experiment with substitutions to make it your own.
