Equipment

  • Food processor or rolling pin
  • Large mixing bowls
  • Electric mixer or whisk
  • 9x13-inch dish or individual cups
  • Spatula
  • Plastic bag (optional, for crushing Oreos)

Ingredients

  • Oreo cookies 36 cookies: Regular or double-stuffed work great.
  • Instant chocolate pudding mix 2 boxes, 3.9 oz each: For that rich, chocolaty flavor.
  • Cold milk 3½ cups: To prepare the pudding.
  • Cream cheese 8 oz, softened: Adds creaminess to the topping.
  • Powdered sugar 1 cup: Sweetens the cream cheese layer.
  • Whipped topping 8 oz, thawed: Like Cool Whip, for a light and fluffy texture.
  • Butter ½ cup, softened: Blends with the cream cheese.
  • Gummy worms optional: For a fun, dirt-like garnish.

Instructions

Step 1: Crush the Oreos

  • Place the Oreo cookies in a food processor and pulse until they turn into fine crumbs. If you don’t have a food processor, put the cookies in a plastic bag and crush them with a rolling pin. Set the crumbs aside for layering.

Step 2: Prepare the Chocolate Pudding

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the instant chocolate pudding mix with 3½ cups of cold milk. Whisk for about 2 minutes until the pudding thickens. Let it sit for 5 minutes to fully set.

Step 3: Make the Cream Cheese Layer

  • In another bowl, beat the softened cream cheese and butter together until smooth. Add the powdered sugar and mix until fully combined. Fold in the thawed whipped topping gently with a spatula.

Step 4: Assemble the First Layer

  • Spread about ⅓ of the crushed Oreos evenly across the bottom of a 9x13-inch dish or individual cups. This forms the base of your dirt cake. Press the crumbs down lightly to create a solid layer.

Step 5: Add the Pudding Layer

  • Spoon the prepared chocolate pudding over the Oreo crumb base. Spread it out evenly with a spatula to cover the crumbs completely. This layer adds that rich, chocolaty goodness.

Step 6: Spread the Cream Cheese Layer

  • Carefully spread the cream cheese mixture over the pudding layer. Use a spatula to smooth it out evenly. This creamy layer balances the chocolate and adds a light texture.

Step 7: Top with More Oreos

  • Sprinkle the remaining crushed Oreos over the cream cheese layer. Make sure the top is fully covered to give it that classic "dirt" look. Press the crumbs down slightly if needed.

Step 8: Add Gummy Worms (Optional)

  • Place gummy worms on top of the Oreo crumbs, pressing them in slightly. Arrange them however you like to mimic worms in dirt. This step is optional but adds a fun touch.

Step 9: Chill the Dessert

  • Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours. Chilling helps the layers set and makes it easier to serve. For best results, let it sit overnight.

Notes

When making this Oreo dirt cake, ensure the cream cheese and butter are softened for smooth mixing, and use cold milk for the pudding to set properly. Chill the dessert for at least 2 hours—or overnight—for the best texture and flavor. Avoid freezing, as it can affect the consistency of the layers.
