Equipment

  • Sheet pan
  • Mixing bowls
  • Whisk
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Spatula

Ingredients

For the Casserole:

  • 1 loaf of brioche bread or use challah or French bread for extra texture
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 ½ cups whole milk
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg optional
  • Pinch of salt

For the Topping:

  • cup unsalted butter melted
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Optional toppings: powdered sugar maple syrup, fresh berries, or whipped cream

Instructions

Step 1: Get the Bread Ready

  • Cut the bread into small cubes, about 1-inch big. This helps them soak up the custard evenly. Spread the cubes in one layer on a big baking tray. If the bread is a little old and dry, that’s even better because it won’t get too soggy.

Step 2: Make the Custard

  • Crack some eggs into a medium bowl and whisk them well until the yolks and whites are mixed. Slowly add milk, cream, sugar, vanilla, and a pinch of salt. Keep whisking until everything is smooth and mixed together.

Step 3: Mix Bread and Custard

  • Pour the custard over the bread cubes on the tray. Gently press the bread down with your hands or a spatula to make sure every piece soaks up the liquid. Let it sit for 10–15 minutes so the bread can absorb the custard properly.

Step 4: Add Toppings

  • If you want, add toppings like fruit, nuts, or chocolate chips. You can also sprinkle cinnamon or nutmeg on top. If you’re using melted butter or jam, spread it evenly with a pastry brush for a nice finish.

Step 5: Bake the Casserole

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) while the bread soaks up the custard. Cover the tray with foil so the top doesn’t brown too fast. Bake for 25–30 minutes, then take off the foil and bake for another 10–15 minutes until the top is golden and crispy.

Step 6: Serve and Enjoy

  • Let the casserole cool for about 5 minutes before cutting it into pieces. This helps it set. Serve warm with syrup, powdered sugar, or your favorite toppings. Enjoy this tasty breakfast or brunch dish!

Notes

When making this recipe, be sure to use slightly stale, sturdy bread to prevent it from becoming overly soggy. Keep an eye on the oven during the last few minutes of baking to ensure the casserole doesn’t overcook, and don’t forget to customize it with your favorite toppings for a personal touch!
